Day 6. Shap to Kirkby Stephen, a long 20 mile-ish day with ~ 1870 feet climbed
Shap to Kirby Stephen was a long day at 21 miles. Fortunately for today, the Greyhound Hotel was on the right side of Shap so we had a 19 mile walk. The hotel chef took mercy on us and started cooking breakfast early at 7:15am. We ate and took off. Sawsan decided to do the first part in the luggage transport van to Orton cutting off 6 miles from the total.
Staying hydrated.
Firoz, Trish and Bill waited in Orton for Sawsan to arrive by transport. Petra, Susan and Gwen went ahead.
It was a day full of Swaledale sheep (black faces and legs, white bodies), rolling hills, dry stacked stone walls and careful foot placement to avoid sheep deposits.
There were many private properties that had ‘permissive paths’ through them expressly for foot travelers.
Gwen Petra and Susan arrived In Kirby Stephen at about 6PM. All the restaurants were booked so we ordered delicious Indian takeout from Mango Tree. Bill and Trish arrived followed by Sawsan and Firoz. We were victorious.
The cottage we rented ‘Summerseat’ was lovely and had laundry capabilities (Petra was laundry Czar). We spent 2 days in Kirby Stephens and had a lovely time.
