Day 13. Osmotherly to White Lion.

We leave the hostel at 7:00 AM. This is going to be our longest mileage day at just under 20 miles and arguably are most tiring with significant altitude gain/loss.  We will have climbs along the crest of the Cleveland Hills and a long walk along a plateau through North York Moors National Park (NYMNP).

The Coast to Coast Path follows the Cleveland Way, which is one of the UK’s national trails, for most of the day.

No Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to be found here. Also makes you realize that we weren’t original in our naming scheme in the States.

The scenery almost immediately changes from our previous two days. It is a lovely wooded area with steady increasing elevation.

As we head out of the woods the Cleveland Way becomes “paved”.

We are now on the ridge of the escarpment and will begin our up and down along the top of the hills.

At the bottom of our second hill we find a fabulous cafe/store/glamping site. After a refreshing Swedish cider, beverages, homemade goodies and snacks we are off to tackle the Wainstones.

So we climb

And climb…we can see them

Stop for a photo

Climb some more

Stop for photo. By now you realize that these are rest stops.

Almost there

We are here- the Wainstones!

View from the top

We begin our long walk through the moors.

This is a wild and stark but stunning area. Imagine the entire area covered in heather in full bloom a few weeks ago.

Interesting crosses along the way.

Grouse everywhere just waiting to fly up and scare you as you walk by.

We end our day as we approach the Lion Inn which has been there for 400 years. The most deserved pints ever!
